Pulse Longboards is made up of two kiwi blokes from the land of the long white cloud, New Zealand. We are based in Christchurch, which managed to get into the international spotlight for some reasonably devastating earthquakes pre Japan’s one. We are both university students who balance studying, building and enjoying the social life of typical 21 year olds! Scott McCallum is studying law and commerce and specialises in handling admin and orders. Will White is in his honours year of Chinese and works on product development.
We build from our garage, which has followed us flat to flat- the frequent moves and workshop redesigns have been trying at times but were no match for the kiwi DIY attitude.
Pulse was originally started to make kiteboards but as more research was done, longboards seemed a more attractive option. With Scott joining in Aug 2008 with some much needed capital input, Pulse in its current form was born. What has kept us going is a love of building, a love of board sports and a desire to live a life less ordinary.
Now in our 3rd year of building, we have gone from hobbyists to company owners. In that time we have progressed from making basic wood decks to comfortably using fibreglass, carbon fibre and foam as well as a range of woods. We offer full custom builds, including custom graphics. This level of customisation has seen us continue to use vacuum bagging as our primary production method though with a standard lineup of decks and a website update close to completion, we will be constructing and using a pneumatic press very soon. We sell to about 15 different countries and plan to keep pushing that.
Anyone who seriously builds boards knows how addictive it is. After building over 500 decks we still find it exciting! From designing, laminating and cutting to answering emails, making stickers and submitting tax returns- there isn’t a thing that we don’t enjoy doing.
Turns out it’s true: find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.
Had to include this amazing picture. “Quakeboarding- everyone in NZ should understand. This is a pic from the city of the Pulse workshop”
